Daitarn 3 (無敵鋼人ダイターン3, Muteki Kōjin Daitān 3?, letteralmente: "Daitarn 3, l'invincibile uomo d'acciaio") è una serie anime televisiva giapponese di genere mecha, prodotta dalla Sunrise e creata da Yoshiyuki Tomino, autore anche di Gundam, con il mecha design di Kunio Okawara e le musiche di Takeo Watanabe e Yuji Matsuyama.
La serie, composta di 40 episodi, è stata realizzata nel 1978, e trasmessa per la prima volta in Italia nel 1980.
Trama
All'inizio del XXI secolo, sulla Terra iniziano ad accadere strani avvenimenti e sparizioni misteriose di persone. Dietro a tutto ciò ci sono i Meganoidi, una razza di Cyborg creati su Marte dal professor Haran Sozo e poi sfuggiti al suo controllo. A capo di questa razza ci sono Don Zauker (una sorta di mostro di Frankenstein che parla in modo inintelligibile) e Koros (un'inquietante cyborg femminile dal fascino glaciale). Scopo finale dei Meganoidi è rendere schiavi gli esseri umani e poi trasformare i "migliori" in Meganoidi.A contrastare i loro piani c'è però Haran Banjo, il figlio del professor Sozo, che pilota il gigantesco robot trasformabile Daitarn 3. Ad affiancare Banjo ci sono inizialmente Garrison Tokida (il maggiordomo tuttofare) e Beauty Tachibana (una bionda mozzafiato figlia di un famoso imprenditore). A loro presto si aggiungono Reika Sanjo (un'agente dell'Interpol) ed il piccolo Toppi (un orfano salvato da Banjo).Comunque, il compito di Banjo non è facile, in quanto i Meganoidi hanno sviluppato una tecnologia sorprendente con cui hanno realizzato le Macchine della Morte (una strana sorta di astronavi/robot, spesso dotata di immense e improbabili mani) e che rende i Comandanti Meganoidi in grado di trasformarsi in enormi robot da combattimento (Megaborg) che daranno filo da torcere al Daitarn 3. La storia si sviluppa in maniere episodica, rivelando a poco a poco il passato di Haran Banjo, la sua spettacolare fuga da Marte con i Meganoidi alle calcagna e le ragioni del suo odio per loro. Dopo una serie di mirabolanti avventure che spazieranno dalla fantascienza, all'avventura in stile Indiana Jones, all'horror e così via, Banjo ed i suoi compagni combatteranno la battaglia finale, nel disperato tentativo di sventare il folle piano di Koros di far collidere Marte con la Terra.
A differenza di molte serie di "robottoni" sue contemporanee, in Daitarn 3 prevale un tono "giocoso" che, pur non evitando parti drammatiche o impressionanti, la rende decisamente atipica. Sono inoltre presenti dozzine di citazioni da cinema, libri, fumetti e TV : ad esempio, nell'episodio 32 la base dei Meganoidi è uguale alla Morte Nera di Guerre Stellari; nell'episodio 36, dove Banjo è oggetto di tortura psicologica, uno dei cattivi si chiama Phroid, chiara parodia di Sigmund Freud; in un altro episodio Banjo prende parte alle riprese di un film di Kung Fu e così via. Altra caratteristica peculiare della serie è che il Daitarn è uno dei pochi robot giganti dotati di proprie espressioni facciali.

Synopsis
Beginning of the twenty-first century, Earth strange events begin occurring and mysterious disappearances of people. Behind all this there are Megadeth, a race of Mars created by Professor Cyborg Sozo Haran and then escaped his control. At the head of this breed there are Don Zauker (a kind of Frankenstein monster who speaks unintelligible) and Koros (uncanny cyborg female charm glacial). Ultimate goal of Megadeth and enslave human beings and then transform the "best" in Meganoidi.A thwart their plans but there is Banjo Haran, the son of Professor Sozo, which drives the giant transformable robot Daitarn 3. Banjo to support us are initially Tokida Garrison (the butler handyman) and Beauty Tachibana (a blonde daughter of a famous entrepreneur). They soon added Reika Sanjo (an agent of Interpol) and the small Toppi (an orphan rescued by Banjo). However, the task of Banjo is not easy, because Megadeth have developed a remarkable technology with which they have achieved Machines of Death (a strange sort of spaceship / robot, often with immense and improbable hands) and that makes Megadeth Commanders can turn into huge robots fighting (Megaborg) that will challenge the Daitarn 3. The story unfolds in episodic manner, revealing little by little the past of Haran Banjo, his spectacular escape from Mars with Megadeth at their heels and the reasons for his hatred for them. After a series of amazing adventures that range from science fiction, Indiana Jones-style adventure, horror, and so on, Banjo and his companions will fight the final battle in a desperate attempt to foil the mad plan to collide Koros Mars with Earth.
Unlike many series of "robottoni" his contemporary in tone prevails Daitarn 3 "playful" which, while not avoiding shares dramatic or impressive, makes it very atypical. There are also dozens of quotations from movies, books, comics and TV, for example, in episode 32 the basis of Megadeth is equal to the Death Star from Star Wars, episode 36, where Banjo is the subject of psychological torture, one of called bad Phroid, a clear parody of Sigmund Freud, in another episode Banjo takes part in the filming of a movie of Kung Fu and so on. Another characteristic of the series is that the Daitarn is one of the few giant robots with their own facial expressions.
