NATHAN NEVER : AGENTE SPECIALE ALFA !

I richiami al futuro prossimo sono chiari, come le citazioni a numerosi predecessori, sia fumettistici (soprattutto giapponesi), cinematografici (Blade runner su tutti) e letterarie (omaggio fin dal primo numero a Isaac Asimov).
Nathan Never è un ex poliziotto con alle spalle una terribile storia. Sua moglie Laura è stata uccisa da un criminale sfuggito allo stesso Nathan, e sua figlia Ann è stata per anni ricoverata in una clinica psichiatrica, in stato di shock per avere assistito alla morte della madre. Per poter pagare le cure della figlia, Nathan, ritiratosi in un tempio shaolin con l'intento di studiare le arti marziali, è così stato costretto a tornare al suo lavoro e ad accettare un incarico di agente speciale all'interno di un'agenzia privata di investigazioni. Eroe di stampo tradizionale, uomo integerrimo indurito dal lavoro, ma non certo cinico e disincantato, vive le sue avventure in un futuro prossimo, in una civiltà dominata dalla tecnologia e costantemente alle prese con problemi come l'inquinamento e lo strapotere dei mass-media. Le città hanno assunto l'aspetto di sterminate megalopoli e lo Stato, resosi conto che le sole forze di polizia non riescono a fronteggiare la criminalità dilagante, ha incoraggiato la costituzione di agenzie private sovvenzionate in parte con contributi pubblici. L'Agenzia Alfa, per la quale Nathan lavora, è una di queste. La metropoli dove vive e lavora Nathan non ha nome è semplicemente "la Città", palesemente ispirata alla Los Angeles di "Blade Runner". Non mancano, poi, puntate in una sorta di Far West fatto di lande bruciate dal sole e dalla radioattività (come l'Australia di "Mad Max") e le avventure ad "atmosfera zero" sulla Luna (sede di insediamenti minerari e di un super-carcere) o sulle stazioni orbitanti, vere e proprie isole spaziali sospese nel buio del cosmo. Personaggio in equilibrio tra la vecchia figura dell'eroe senza macchia e senza paura e la nuova figura dell'anti-eroe cinico e scanzonato, ha la forza fisica e la preparazione atletica che gli derivano dall'allenamento. Non possiede innesti bionici né poteri extra-sensoriali. Nathan usa la pistola soltanto quando non ha alternative. Il suo stipendio di agente speciale, pur elevato, non lo rende ricco: il suo denaro è servito per anni soltanto a pagare le cure della figlia. E ora che lei, guarita, è partita per lo spazio, il nostro eroe usa i suoi proventi economici per costruirsi una nuova vita. Nathan combatte per la giustizia, ma non è un crociato. Una delle caratteristiche della serie è che tutti i personaggi, eroi o criminali, sono caratterizzati come persone che hanno dei motivi – giusti o sbagliati – per fare quello che fanno. Non esistono persone buone o cattive. Esistono azioni buone o cattive.

Nathan Never is a former policeman with a terrible history behind it.
