Il 24 Agosto, è stata data una di quelle notizie che si spera di non dover mai leggere, specie se si è appassionati del mondo anime e manga: a 46 anni l’acclamato regista Satoshi Kon è morto improvvisamente a causa del cancro al pancreas del quale era malato da tempo. Ad annunciarlo per primo è stato Jim Vowles, membro dello staff direzionale dell’Otakon, sul forum istituzionale della convention. A confermare poi quella che poteva sembrare una burla di pessimo gusto sono stati Yasuhiro Takeda dello studio GAiNAX su Twitter, Masao Maruyama dello studio MADHOUSE sempre su Twitter e Kyōko Kon, moglie del regista, sul sito ufficiale. Cinematical invece è stata tra le prime testate a riportare la notizia anche nel mondo occidentale. Nato a Hokkaido il 12 Ottobre 1963, Satoshi Kon ha iniziato a farsi un nome nel settore dell’animazione sin da giovane, fiancheggiando Katsuhiro Otomo prima in Roujin Z (1991), del quale ha curato i set design, e poi in Memories (1995), del quale ha curato la sceneggiatura dell’episodio Magnetic Rose. Ha debuttato poi in cabina di regia con l’acclamato film Perfect Blue (1997), col quale inizia ad attirare l’attenzione nazionale ed internazionale. A questo sono seguiti poi Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), la serie TV Paranoia Agent (2004) e Paprika (2006). Al momento della morte Kon stava lavorando ad un altro progetto per MADHOUSE, intitolato Yume Miru Kikai (The Dream Machine) la cui uscita è prevista per il 2011.
