Circa vent'anni fa nasceva questo irriverente, lucido, scorretto, chiarificatore, anticipatore, sensibile, oltraggioso, tonico, realistico, confuso, sessualmente esplicito,  divertente,  fumetto inglese: Tank Girl . Frutto della fantasia acida e irriverente del duo  Alan Martin e Jamie Hewlett . Il fumetto racconta le avventure di una giovane soldatessa (contro) dell'esercito australiano,  pilota di carri armati e ribelle. La nostra combatte dal di dentro finchè può, lo sciovinismo e la follia militarista. Ne combina di tutti i colori mettendo in grave imbarazzo i suoi superiori e poi lo stesso presidente della repubblica australiana. Quindi scappa dall'esercito e comincia a vivere una strana accozzaglia di avventure assieme al suo tank e a un malassortito gruppetto di strani contro-eroi,  nel mentre che attraversa l'Australia più selvaggia. Fenomeno  molto british, fumetto di culto di un'intera generazione, quella inglese degli anni '90. Tank Girl più che un comic è un vero e proprio  manifesto ideologico, un perfetto mix di arte, musica, riferimenti culturali di ogni tipo e molta, moltissima politica. Non è un caso che Jamie Hewlett, il papà assieme a Martin del fumetto, sia anche membro-ideatore, assieme al leader dei Blur , Demon Albarn ,  di un altro fenomeno pop estremamente interessante e legato a doppio filo alla cultura musicale oltre che a quella letteraria: i Gorillaz .  Le avvenutre di Tank Girl non hanno un ciclo narrativo molto costante, ne una precisa unità di tempo e di luogo. Partite dall'Australia hanno poi avuto luogo un pò in tutto il mondo e nemmeno il segno grafico è sempre rimasto uguale a se stesso. Il mondo intero del fumetto sia al di dentro delle sue storie che nella scrittura e nel suo confezionamento è in grande divenire, a simboleggiare al meglio lo spirito di ribellione che pervade ogni singolo fotogramma, ogni sbuffo di inchiostro, ogni semplice nuvoletta . Il peccato mortale, come spesso accade con le trasposizioni, è avvenuto proprio quando si è pensato di adattare le demenziali avventure  della ragazza carro armato al cinema. Correva l'anno 1995, e la Mgm ha tratto Tank Girl dalle avventure a fumetti dell'eroina di Hewlett & Martin. Cast a ventiquattro carati con Lory Petty , eccellente Tank Girl, e poi Ice T , Naomi Watts , all'epoca molto meno famosa, ma non per questo meno brava, Malcolm McDowell , mister Arancia Meccanica in persona, ad indossare i panni del cattivo di turno, persino la rockstar Iggy Pop ; ma rien a fair, niente, niente, solo l'inizio, parlo proprio dei titoli di testa,  era in linea col fumetto, e nemmeno troppo. Peccato, peccato per davvero. Ma non è il momento di piangere sul latte versato, anzi è il momento di gioire perchè, qualcuno nel mondo sembra avere ancora bisogno della ragazza carro armato e del suo davvero speciale gruppetto di amici contro-eroi: Jet Girl,   Sub Girl, un canguro semi umano e fidanzato ufficiale di Tank Girl che si chiama Booga, e l'orsacchiotto Camp Koala.  In particolare, nei mesi scorsi, qualcosa si è mosso sul fronte della pubblicazione di nuove storie di Tank Girl attraverso la Idw Publishing con nuove storie.Speriamo presto di vedere pubblicate  anche in Italia. La Coniglio Editore nel 2006 ha mandato alle stampe il primo volume nella collana paracult intitolato semplicemente Tank Girl , cui ha fatto seguito un secondo volume intitolato  Tank Girl: L'Odissea , che è proprio una rilettura "punk" del celeberrimo poema epico di Omero e un terzo volume intitolato Tank Girl: Sunflowers.  Tank Girl è apparsa per la prima volta nel 1988 sulla rivista Deadline. Fra l'88 e il 1994 le sue storie sono apparse in tutto su 49 numeri della rivista. Nel 1995, Tank Girl ha conquistato una sua rivista, per la casa editrice Manga, in cui le sue storie sono state pubblicate per 8 mesi. Fra il 1991 e il 1993, il personaggio è stato acquistato e pubblicato dalla Dark Horse . Fra il 1995 e il '96 Tank Girl è uscita anche per la Vertigo , il marchio adulto della Dc comics.
